Whatever posses us to take on an apartment companion such asa cat. As soon as you get it, it seems to come with some unwritten instructionsthat everyone knows, but no one cares about. Let me be more precise if I may.
Everyone knows they are self-centered, but we prefer to callit independence. They are independent to the point where they don’t even needyou, but still, that doesn’t stop you.
They are mean when it serves their purpose – and it doesseem to serve them a lot. But of course, we turn a blind eye to that as well.
You never know if it really loves you, or if it settled for you for lack of something better. You never know if once the opportunity presents itself it wouldn’t leave you for a better snack, bigger house, and softer pillows… That’s why you always find new ways to make it happy – the best entertainment, the best toys, the best food, the best accommodations – and still, that gives no assurance. Still you don’t care.
Why is that? Why do we choose to overlook everything for this furry little animal? Maybe it’s because of the funny moves it does when it chases the ball, or for the way it purrs when it comes near you, or for the way it meows when it sees you holding a pack of their favorite food, or maybe it’s because they are so pretty.
It might be all that, but it also might be the fact that it reminds us of someone we all know so well, ourselves. Self centered, unreliable, mean whenever it serves our purpose. Does that ring a bell?
Be that as it may, it also serves as an alarm clock, that in this “every man for himself” society, we should learn to give without expecting anything in return, cheesy as at it might seem. It should remind us that relationships are hard work, and shouldn’t be taken for granted, even if we are talking about the mere affections of an independent, self centered, little old cat.
